“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” - Helen Keller
We win a race, get first in a competition, break a world record, or earn millions of dollars. The moment we have spent years dreaming about finally happens.
We close our eyes and take that victorious deep breath. Our eyes open on top of the mountain that we valiantly conquered. Only to realize we are all alone. We are cheering for ourselves.
The painful reality starts to set in. The reality that we lost everyone important on the journey to what we thought was most important.
As 2018 comes to a close, this quote has been an unexpected yet needed reminder. A reminder that people will always be more important than products and dollar signs. That there is no greater impact for me to leave than how I love my wife, my family, and people.
I’d rather stand neck deep in the valley with my best friends than to look down at them from my lonely mountain top.
